TESOL's English Language Proficiency Standards and the Common Core State Standards: Applications and Implications for Effective Instruction of ELLs

Wednesday, 20 February 2013, 10:30 am–12:00 pm ET
Registration Deadline:
15 February 2013

Presenters: Judy O’Loughlin and Lynore Carnuccio
Audience: K–12 teachers (mainstream and ESOL)

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are recognized as an over-arching guide for U.S. language arts and mathematics curricula. These standards indicate that academic success must be exhibited in various language domains; however, they do not address the specific instructional needs of diverse groups such as ELLs in the schools. The TESOL Prek-12 English Language Proficiency Standards (2006) provide the necessary framework that, when blended with CCSS, will delineate instruction targeting academic content while guiding the academic language to appropriately address students’ level of language proficiency. Registration Deadline: 19 April 2013

Presenter: Joan Kang Shin

The presenter will explain the keys to success for teaching young learners English as an international language that includes taking a developmentally appropriate approach and building 21st century skills to prepare children for the world they live in.
